Rob Thomson, known as “Topper,” is a Canadian baseball manager whose career spans playing, coaching, and leading Major League Baseball teams. A standout player for the Stratford Nationals in Ontario, he went on to play college baseball at St. Clair County Community College and later the University of Kansas, where he led the Jayhawks in hits in 1984 and 1985 and set the school’s single season batting average record.

Thomson was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 32nd round of the 1985 MLB Draft and spent four seasons in their minor league system as a catcher and third baseman before transitioning into coaching. His post playing career began with the Oneonta Yankees, followed by a long tenure in the New York Yankees organization. Known for his meticulous preparation, he earned the nickname “Topper” from manager Joe Torre, who noted that Thomson was “always on top of everything,” while running Yankees spring training. Thomson served as the Yankees’ bench coach in 2008, third base coach from 2009 to 2014, and bench coach again from 2015 to 2017, contributing to the team’s 2009 World Series championship.

In 2018, Thomson joined the Philadelphia Phillies as bench coach. His managerial breakthrough came on June 3, 2022, when he was named interim manager after Joe Girardi’s dismissal. Under Thomson, the Phillies surged to their first postseason appearance since 2011, leading to his appointment as full time manager on October 10, 2022. That same year, he guided the team to its first National League pennant since 2009. Thomson’s four full seasons with the Phillies were marked by consistent success, including four postseason appearances and two National League East titles from 2022 through 2025.
